Cordyceps Militaris vs Sinensis: Species, Studies, Safety and Breathizen

Written by the Breathizen editorial team · Last updated · 7 min read · Medical review below

Quick answerCordyceps militaris and Cordyceps sinensis are different fungi. Militaris is easy to cultivate; wild sinensis is scarce, so most products use lab-grown strains. Exercise studies used about 4 g a day of a militaris blend and about 1 g a day of a sinensis product, with mixed results. Cordyceps may lower blood sugar and affect bleeding. Breathizen uses militaris, amount not published.

Overview

Cordyceps militaris vs sinensis: what are they?

Orange Cordyceps militaris mushrooms and powder
Cordyceps militaris has bright orange fruiting bodies.

Cordyceps is a group of fungi used in traditional Asian medicine. Two names come up most on supplement labels: Cordyceps militaris and Cordyceps sinensis. They are related, but they are not the same thing.

Breathizen names organic Cordyceps militaris fruit extract as its fifth ingredient. This article explains how the two species differ, what the studies found and who should be careful.

Species

How do the two species differ?

Militaris and sinensis are separate species. In the wild, both grow on insect larvae. Sinensis is linked to high mountain areas, where it is hard to find and costly to collect.

Scientists have since moved sinensis into a different genus, so you may see it called Ophiocordyceps sinensis. Labels often still use the older name. Either way, it is not the same fungus as militaris.

Cultivation

How are militaris and sinensis grown?

Cultivation is the biggest practical difference. Militaris can be grown on grain or other substrates in controlled rooms. That makes it easier to supply at a steady quality and price.

Wild sinensis is too rare for most supplements. Instead, makers grow a strain of the fungus by fermentation and sell that material. The Cs-4 product used in one study is an example.

Fruiting body vs mycelium

The fruiting body is the part that grows above ground. The mycelium is the network of threads underneath. Supplements may use either, and the label should say which. Breathizen names a fruit extract.

Studies

What do the cordyceps studies show?

The studies cited most often looked at exercise, not at lung disease. Both were small, and they used different products.

The militaris study

Young, healthy adults took 4 g a day of a mushroom blend that contained Cordyceps militaris (Hirsch et al., 2017). After 1 week there was no clear change. After 3 weeks, some measures of high-intensity exercise tolerance improved.

The sinensis study

Twenty adults aged 50 to 75 took about 1 g a day of the Cs-4 sinensis product for 12 weeks (Chen et al., 2010). Some breathing-threshold measures during exercise improved compared with placebo. This was a different species from the one in Breathizen.

  1. Week 1

Militaris blend study: no clear change in exercise measures yet.

  2. Week 3

Militaris blend study: some high-intensity exercise measures improved.

  3. Week 12

Sinensis Cs-4 study: some breathing-threshold measures improved in older adults.

Memorial Sloan Kettering sums up the wider picture: exercise studies in healthy people gave mixed results (MSKCC, Cordyceps). Neither study tested people with asthma or COPD.

Dosage

What is the dosage of Cordyceps militaris?

There is no established dose of Cordyceps militaris. The studies above used about 1 to 4 g a day of different products. That is a lot of material, usually given as powder or capsules.

Breathizen lists organic Cordyceps militaris fruit extract, but the amount is not published. The whole daily serving is 0.60 mL of liquid shared by five extracts. So we cannot say how it compares with the study doses.

Cordyceps militarisStudied at 1-4 g a day

Exercise studies used about 1 to 4 g a day. The amount in one 0.60 mL serving is not published. (Hirsch et al., 2017)

BromelainEvidence: limited

One small pilot study in chronic sinusitis; NCCIH says there is not enough research to recommend it. (NCCIH, Bromelain)

Mullein leafEvidence: lab only

Folk use for coughs; the research is mainly lab work on plant compounds. (Turker & Gurel, 2005)

Ginger rootEvidence: lab only

Airway muscle relaxed in lab tissue tests, not in people. (Townsend et al., 2013)

Whole formula0.60 mL a day

Five extracts share one 0.60 mL serving, and none has a published amount. (21 CFR 101.36)

Safety

Is cordyceps safe? Who should be careful

Cordyceps is not risk-free. MSKCC notes that it may lower blood sugar and may raise bleeding risk with blood thinners such as warfarin (MSKCC, Cordyceps).

Cordyceps safety checks

  • Ask your doctor first if you take warfarin or another blood thinner.
  • Ask first if you take diabetes medicine, since blood sugar may drop.
  • Ask first if you have a mushroom allergy, or are pregnant or nursing.
  • Stop before surgery if your doctor advises it.
  • Keep using your inhaler and prescribed medicines as directed.

The side effects page covers cautions for every Breathizen ingredient. The Cordyceps militaris page goes deeper on this one.

Lungs

Is cordyceps good for your lungs?

People often ask whether cordyceps is good for the lungs. There is no strong evidence that it improves lung function or treats any lung disease. The exercise studies measured performance and breathing thresholds in healthy people.

If you live with COPD or asthma, your treatment plan comes first (NHLBI, COPD). Talk to your care team before adding cordyceps or any supplement.

Label check

What should a cordyceps label tell you?

If you shop for a cordyceps product, the label should answer a few plain questions. Missing answers make it hard to judge.

  1. 01

    Which species?

Militaris or sinensis, written in full.

  2. 02

    Which part?

    Fruiting body, mycelium, or both.

  3. 03

    How much?

An amount in milligrams or grams per serving.

  4. 04

    Grown how?

Cultivated or fermented strain, if stated.

Breathizen

How is Cordyceps militaris used in Breathizen?

Breathizen is an oral spray with five named ingredients. Cordyceps militaris sits beside mullein leaf, ginger root, bromelain and organic lemon. See the ingredients page for all five.

Honest note

The cordyceps amount is not published, and no trial of the spray has been published. The species matches the militaris study, but the dose and form do not. We think that is worth knowing before you buy.

  1. Are you an adult, 18 or older?

  2. Do you use an inhaler or take asthma or COPD medicine?

  3. Do you get short of breath at rest, or have chest pain or bluish lips?

  4. Do you take blood thinners or diabetes medicine?

  5. Are you allergic to pineapple, ginger or mushrooms, or pregnant or nursing?

FAQ

Cordyceps militaris vs sinensis FAQ

What is the difference between Cordyceps militaris and sinensis?

They are different species of fungus. Militaris can be grown on a large scale, while wild sinensis is rare, so most sinensis products use strains grown in a lab.

Is Cordyceps militaris better than sinensis?

Neither has been proven better. Each has a few small studies, and they used different products, doses and groups of people.

What are the benefits of Cordyceps militaris?

One study found some exercise measures improved after 3 weeks of a 4 g daily blend containing militaris. Overall, exercise results for cordyceps are mixed.

What is the dosage of Cordyceps militaris?

There is no set dose. Exercise studies used about 1 to 4 g a day of different cordyceps products, so follow your product label.

Is Cordyceps militaris safe?

Cordyceps may lower blood sugar and may raise bleeding risk with blood thinners such as warfarin. Ask your doctor first if you take these medicines.

Does cordyceps help your lungs?

There is no strong evidence that it improves lung function. A small trial in older adults found changes in some breathing-threshold measures during exercise, using a sinensis product.

Is cordyceps a mushroom?

Yes, it is a fungus that forms a mushroom-like fruiting body. Militaris has a bright orange fruiting body.

What is a cordyceps militaris extract?

It is a concentrate made from the mushroom, often from the fruiting body. Labels should say which part was used and how much is in each serving.

How much cordyceps is in Breathizen?

The amount is not published. Breathizen names organic Cordyceps militaris fruit extract as its fifth ingredient, in a 0.60 mL daily serving.
