Written by the Breathizen editorial team · Last updated · 7 min read · Medical review below

Quick answerNo product can detox your lungs. Healthy lungs clean themselves, and the American Lung Association says detox products are not needed. For smokers, the step that helps is quitting, which the CDC says improves health at any age. Lung cleanse teas and drinks may feel soothing, but they do not clear the lungs. Breathizen makes no detox claim.

Quick answer

Can you detox your lungs? The short answer

Lung detox is a big online topic. Teas, drinks, pills and steam kits all promise to clear out your lungs. The science says your lungs do not need that help.

The American Lung Association explains that healthy lungs clean themselves (American Lung Association, lung detox). It says the ways to protect them are not smoking, avoiding pollution and staying active. Detox products are not on that list.

How lungs work

How do your lungs clean themselves?

Your airways are lined with a thin layer of mucus. It traps dust, germs and other particles you breathe in. Tiny hair-like structures called cilia then sweep that mucus up toward the throat.

From there you swallow it or cough it out. This happens all day, every day, without any product. Coughing is part of the same system.

What gets in the way

Smoke is the biggest problem. It irritates the airways and can damage the cilia over time. Polluted air and some workplace dusts also add strain. Removing those exposures is what helps the system work.

Smokers

Is there a lung cleanse for smokers?

Searches for lung cleanse for smokers are common. People want to undo the damage. The honest answer is that no cleanse can do that.

What helps is quitting. The CDC says quitting smoking improves health at any age and lowers the risk of lung disease (CDC, Benefits of quitting). It is never too late to start, and many people need more than one try.

  1. Decide

Pick a quit date and tell people around you. Remove cigarettes, lighters and ashtrays.

  2. Get support

Ask your doctor about quit medicines, and call 1-800-QUIT-NOW for free coaching.

  3. Handle cravings

Plan for triggers like coffee, stress or driving. A short walk can help a craving pass.

  4. Keep going

Slips happen. Treat a slip as a lesson and return to your plan the same day.

  5. Check your lungs

Ask your doctor whether you need lung tests or screening based on your smoking history.

No smoke of any kind

Vaping or smoking herbs is not a safer way to clean your lungs. Smoke of any kind harms them. Never inhale, vape or smoke any supplement or herb.

Remedies

Do lung cleanse remedies and drinks work?

Many lung cleanse remedies are harmless in themselves. The problem is the promise. A tea that soothes your throat is fine. A tea that claims to scrub tar from your lungs is not telling the truth.

Common lung cleanse remedies and what they can do. Comfort is not the same as cleaning the lungs.

Tea

Does lung cleanse tea help?

Lung cleanse tea blends often include herbs such as mullein, ginger or thyme. These plants have traditional uses, but none has been shown to clean the lungs. Our article on mullein for lungs explains how thin that research is.

If you enjoy tea, drink it for comfort and hydration. Do not use it in place of a medical visit for a cough that will not go away.

Drinks

What about lemon water and other cleanse drinks?

Lemon water, ginger shots and green juices are often sold as lung cleanse drinks. They can be part of a healthy diet. None of them reaches the lungs or washes anything out.

Lemon is a good example. Vitamin C trials found that regular doses of at least 0.2 g a day did not prevent colds in most people and only slightly shortened them (Hemilä & Chalker, Cochrane 2013). A squeeze of lemon in water holds far less, and colds are not the same as lung damage.

Enjoy these drinks for taste and fluid. Judge them as food, not as treatment.

Red flags

Red flags on lung detox products

Some lung detox products are simply overpriced. Others delay real care. These red flags help you spot the ones to avoid.

  1. 01

It promises to remove tar or mucus

No supplement or tea has been shown to pull tar or mucus out of the lungs.

  2. 02

It claims to reverse smoking damage

That is a disease claim. Supplements are not allowed to make it.

  3. 03

    It shows before-and-after lung pictures

Those images are not evidence. They are often illustrations or stock photos.

  4. 04

    It hides the amounts

A label without amounts makes it impossible to judge the product.

  5. 05

It tells you to stop your medicine

Never stop an inhaler or prescribed medicine for any supplement.

Protection

What actually protects your lungs?

Real lung protection is less exciting than a detox kit, but it works. These habits support the cleaning system your lungs already have.

Habits that protect your lungs

  • Do not smoke, and keep your home and car smoke-free.
  • Check local air quality and limit hard outdoor exercise on bad days.
  • Use proper protection if your job involves dust or fumes.
  • Stay active so your breathing muscles keep working.
  • Take prescribed lung medicines exactly as directed.
  • See a doctor for a cough that lasts or breathing that gets worse.
Breathizen

Why does Breathizen not claim to detox your lungs?

Breathizen is an oral spray sold for breathing comfort. It names mullein leaf, ginger root, bromelain, organic lemon and organic Cordyceps militaris. You can read about each on the ingredients page.

We do not say it detoxes or cleanses the lungs. There is no evidence for that, and the Federal Trade Commission expects health claims to be backed by solid science (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance). Making a detox claim would mislead you.

Honest note

The spray's ingredient amounts are not published, and no trial of the spray itself has been published. The daily serving is 4 pumps, or 0.60 mL. We see it as a simple morning extra for adults who want one, nothing more.

Our buying guide on choosing a lung supplement explains how to spot cleanse claims on any label.

  • Not a detox

No claim that it cleans or clears the lungs.

  • Not a medicine

Not an inhaler, not an asthma or COPD drug.

Warning signs

When is a breathing change a reason to see a doctor?

A detox search sometimes hides a real worry. If your breathing has changed, see a doctor rather than trying a cleanse. Sudden or severe shortness of breath, chest pain or bluish lips need 911 (MedlinePlus, Breathing difficulty).

Our article on when shortness of breath needs a doctor lists the signs in more detail.

FAQ

Lung detox FAQ

Can you detox your lungs naturally?

Your lungs already clean themselves. Not smoking, avoiding polluted air and staying active protect that natural process far more than any product.

What is the fastest lung cleanse for smokers?

There is no fast lung cleanse. Quitting smoking is the step with real evidence, and the CDC says it helps at any age.

Do lung cleanse teas work?

No tea has been shown to clean the lungs. A warm tea can soothe a dry throat, but that is comfort, not a cleanse.

Are there drinks that clean your lungs?

No drink clears the lungs. Water keeps you hydrated, which helps your body in general, but it does not wash anything out of your lungs.

Do lung cleanse supplements work?

There is no good evidence that they do. The American Lung Association says detox products are not needed because the lungs clean themselves.

Can your lungs heal after you quit smoking?

Quitting helps your health at any age and lowers the risk of lung disease. Some damage may stay, so talk to your doctor about lung checks.

Why do I cough more after quitting smoking?

Many people notice coughing for a while after quitting. A cough that lasts, brings up blood or comes with weight loss needs a doctor.

Does Breathizen detox your lungs?

No. Breathizen is an oral spray sold for breathing comfort. We do not claim it detoxes or cleanses the lungs, because there is no evidence for that.

What are the warning signs of lung damage?

A cough that will not go away, shortness of breath with light activity, wheezing or chest pain all need a doctor. Sudden severe breathlessness needs 911.
